Extreme Picky Eating Treatment
EXTREME PICKY EATING PART II: RESPONSIVE FEEDING SUPPORT & TREATMENT APPROACH
This webinar builds on the foundation of understanding and introduces common pediatric feeding therapies including ABA (applied behavioral analytics and behavior modification) and SOS (sensory oral sequential). We will explore supporting families of children with extreme picky eating in a responsive, relationship-building approach grounded in Satter's feeding dynamics model (fdSatter). We will address some of the criticism and misunderstandings around applying fdSatter ("only works for neurotypical children" for example) to children with complex feeding challenges. We will explore Rowell and McGlothlin's STEPs+ approach full of practical tips and strategies that can dramatically improve the feeding relationship and help children move themselves along the path to eating competence.

Note: If Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility (sDOR) is a new term or concept for you, we recommend taking other Ellyn Satter webinars as listed in the "Other Webinars by this Presenter/Organization" section at the bottom of the page.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • In ABA (applied behavioral) therapies, list two "behaviors" that may be targets of positive or negative reinforcement.

  • Understand how Division of Responsibility is foundational to responsive feeding strategies and therapies.

  • List three ways to reduce anxiety around eating and mealtimes.

  • Give two options for weaning children off screens while eating.

  • Describe three options to help a child expand variety (bridges).

  • Describe how fdSatter can be applied flexibly to long-standing feeding challenges.
