USING THE SATTER MODEL WHEN FEEDING CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
Do you work with children on the autism spectrum and their families? Are you often asked about how to help these children eat a wider variety of food and enjoy family meals? Using the Satter Model when Feeding Children with Autism addresses best practices around feeding children and helps provide clarity and guidance. We will explore how to best support families to implement the Satter division of responsibility model with their children with autism.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Have a better understanding of why children with autism often struggle with eating.


  • Understand what the “gold standard” of feeding children and how to guide families towards that track.


  • Have a clear understanding of the Satter DOR and how it can be applied to children with autism.


  • Understand eating competency and how this is the lifelong goal being strived for not just have a focus on what the child eats.


  • Understand how to provide guidance to families who are being given lots of conflicting advice decide what information to take and keep and utilize to help their children and families have loving enjoyable meals.

Michelle Segovias

Michelle Segovias, MOT, OTR/L is an occupational therapist who works with children whose families have described them as picky eaters and who are struggling to learn to eat family foods. Michelle helps families implement the Satter division of responsibility in feeding and reestablish family mealtimes. Working with children with autism, developmental delays, and medical complications, Michelle strives to show families the value in mealtimes even if they aren’t perfect.

Peggy Crum

Peggy Crum, MA, RD, is a registered dietitian with a master's degree in health and risk communication. Her early career was in pediatrics, first at St. Paul Children's Hospital, then in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University where she guided families of children with special needs with the help of Satter's feeding dynamics model. Currently Peggy is a nutritionist for MSU's health promotion and student health education programs where Satter's eating competence model informs her writing, program development, and counseling. Peggy trained with Ellyn Satter in Treating the Dieting Casualty in 2007 offering How To Eat to individuals and groups since then.
