Diabetes Medications
DIABETES MEDICATION UPDATE: THE TRIED, THE TRUE AND THE NEW
Taking anti-glycemic medications is a key evidence-based intervention for people with diabetes to achieve their blood glucose targets. The challenge for diabetes professionals is to keep updated on what they NEED TO KNOW about all the many oral and injectable diabetes drugs currently on the market (including insulins) in order to furnish quality diabetes care and education to their patients. This presentation formats the oral drugs into those with a high and a low risk for hypoglycemia. Within each of these 2 categories are the drugs best suited for controlling fasting blood glucose and post-meal glucose, with supporting details on each drug's brand and generic names, risks, benefits, sites and mechanisms of actions, reported advantages and disadvantages, and application route. Basal and bolus insulin therapy in T1 and T2 diabetes are reviewed, including insulin types, how to calculate starting doses, how to prepare and inject insulin doses, and syringe, needle and pen types. Challenging insulin FAQs are reviewed, along with the newest "Medication Algorithm for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes."

This is one presentation you do not want to miss. Special bonus: the slides deck will be a great desk top diabetes medication reference for you and your staff.
Upon successful completion of this two-hour course, the participant should be able to name:
  • the sites of action (target organs) of the current diabetes medications.

  • 5 of the many considerations for prescribing medications for diabetes.

  • the 4 lifestyle interventions recommended for PWDs, and the first medication to be prescribed as 'monotherapy', per the ADA.

  • the 6 'dual' medication therapies if the A1c target is not achieved after 3 months of monotherapy, per the ADA.

  • the diabetes medications with a low risk of hypoglycemia used primarily to control fasting and pre-meal blood glucose.

  • the diabetes medications with a low risk of hypoglycemia used primarily to control post-meal blood glucose.
