What You Need To Know About The Code of Ethics,
Including When Using Social Media


This session meets the RD requirement for a unit of "ETHICS" during a 5 year renewal period. In this webinar, we will review the most current Code of Ethics for the profession of dietetics which is released by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) in conjunction with its credentialing agency, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). We'll also review the 19 principles as well as how those relate to ANDs values. Additionally, we'll review how to apply the Code of Ethics in the workplace and the process and procedure for how to handle ethical complaints. LASTLY, WE'LL REVIEW THE ACADEMY'S PRACTICE PAPER ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE DIETETICS PRACTITIONER. This session meets the RD requirement for a unit of "ETHICS" during a 5 year renewal period.

Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand ethics as it pertains to dietetics.


  • Describe the 19 principles of the profession.


  • Review the process for consideration of the issues.

About the Presenter: Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN

Joanne Rinker is a Master's level dietitian. She has her BS and MS in Human Nutrition from West Virginia University. Joanne has been a Registered Dietitian certified diabetes educator for 20 years.

Rinker has worked in the diabetes care and education space since her very first job. She has a passion for helping people with diabetes and other diabetes care and education specialist around the US. Highlights of her career include working with the North Carolina Diabetes Prevention and Control Program on the implementation and facilitation of the North Carolina Diabetes Education Recognition Program. As the program coordinator 2006-2013, Joanne was instrumental in building the largest American Diabetes Association (ADA) accredited site in the nation.

Joanne was named the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) 2013 Diabetes Educator of the Year and used that opportunity to spread the word about the relationship between diabetes, hearing loss and depression. She served on the AADE Board of Directors 2015-2017 and became an AADE Spokesperson in January of 2016. Joanne was the North Carolina Public Health Association President 2013-2014, is a graduate of the Bernstein Fellowship 2015 class and has been published and presented on the national level for both AADE and ADA.
