Ellyn Satter Webinar
EATING COMPETENCE: GOING BEYOND MINDFUL EATING
Learn from the feeding and eating expert, Ellyn Satter.

"Eating well doesn't have to be a chore or a bore," says Ellyn Satter in Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family. "If the joy goes out of eating, nutrition suffers." Almost everyone today feels anxious and ambivalent about eating, and the more concerned they are about health, the more anxious they feel. It doesn't have to be that way.

The Satter Eating Competence Model (ecSatter) gives a practical, sensible, and evidence-based way to manage eating that achieves positive healthy outcomes. Ellyn Satter, author and researcher of this ground-breaking conceptualization of eating, will give an overview of ecSatter evidence, theory, and practice. As she demonstrates in this consciousness-raising presentation, eating competence means taking pleasure in eating, enjoying a variety of food (not just virtuous food), and trusting one's own body.

This relates directly to Satter's previous webinar, Raising Good Eaters: Prevent Child Feeding Problems. Adults who are competent eaters do better with respect to following the division of responsibility in feeding and supporting children in having a positive relationship with food.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe the basic principles of the Satter Eating Competence Model (ecSatter).

  • List at least three ways eating competent people do better.

  • Using the Hierarchy of Food Needs, explain how adults learn and grow in their eating competence.

  • Describe the next steps in integrating ecSatter personally and in your practice.

  • Describe the similarities and differences between mindful eating and eating competence.

Ellyn Satter

Ellyn Satter worked as a clinical dietitian for the first 20 years in her professional career, first at University of Wisconsin hospitals and then as an outpatient dietitian at a private medical clinic in Madison, Wisconsin. After achieving licensure as a clinical social worker, she spent the rest of her active career as a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders at a private mental health clinic.

Satter's first book, Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense originally came out in 1983 at the time or her transition from a medical to a mental health setting. Child of Mine marked the beginning of her focus on feeding dynamics, and she has since written three other books, numerous articles, and produced educational materials and videos that address the parent-child feeding relationship.

Children and Weight: Helping without Harming approaches the thorny issues around food, weight, and families by empowering parents to love, nurture, and support their children's physical and psychological health.

Satter's most recent book, Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family, applies the Eating Competence Model by talking with adults about being positive, comfortable, and flexible with eating. Since her so-called retirement, Satter has been writing, mentoring, doing research, and helping develop programming for the Ellyn Satter Institute.
