Ellyn Satter on Raising Good Eaters
Learn from the feeding expert Ellyn Satter. If you don’t know about the division of responsibility in feeding (sDOR) then it is time you learned! sDOR is the gold standard in feeding, and this webinar gives you the special opportunity to learn from the person who created it! Satter is the author of Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense, Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family, and Your Child's Weight: Helping Without Harming and creative director for the Ellyn Satter Institute.

The Satter Feeding Dynamics Model (fdSatter) illustrates that when parents follow a developmentally appropriate division of responsibility in feeding (sDOR), children grow up to be competent with eating. Parents who follow sDOR raise children to be competent with eating by taking leadership with the what, when, and where of feeding and giving children autonomy with the how much and whether of eating. Eating competent children feel good about eating, push themselves along to eat the food their parents eat, eat as much as they need to grow well, and are a pleasure to include in family meals.

Best Practice

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes Satter’s division of responsibility in feeding (sDOR) as best practice, as does the American Academy of Pediatrics, USDA Food and Nutrition Service, Head Start, WIC, and the Expert Committee on Child Obesity.

Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe The Satter Feeding Dynamics Model and Satter's division of responsibility in feeding (sDOR).

  • Describe developmental stage-related interactions that either support or undermine children's ability to eat well.

  • Outline how to apply sDOR in solving common childhood feeding problems.

  • List resources for professionals and parents for further learning about this model.

About the Presenters

Ellyn Satter, MS, RD, MSSW
Ellyn Satter

Ellyn Satter worked as a clinical dietitian for the first 20 years in her professional career, first at University of Wisconsin hospitals and then as an outpatient dietitian at a private medical clinic in Madison, Wisconsin. After achieving licensure as a clinical social worker, she spent the rest of her active career as a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders at a private mental health clinic.

Satter's first book, Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense originally came out in 1983 at the time or her transition from a medical to a mental health setting. Child of Mine marked the beginning of her focus on feeding dynamics, and she has since written three other books, numerous articles, and produced educational materials and videos that address the parent-child feeding relationship.

Children and Weight: Helping without Harming approaches the thorny issues around food, weight, and families by empowering parents to love, nurture, and support their children's physical and psychological health.

Satter's most recent book, Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family, applies the Eating Competence Model by talking with adults about being positive, comfortable, and flexible with eating. Since her so-called retirement, Satter has been writing, mentoring, doing research, and helping develop programming for the Ellyn Satter Institute.
