PRIMER ON THE NEW NUTRITION FOOD LABEL, CARB COUNTING AND THE GLYCEMIC INDEX
These are hot nutrition topics that can often be very confusing for patients. Let's take the time to talk about how to effectively have conversations with patients about label reading, and the new changes. We will also review carb counting and the glycemic index. Let's keep it simple and explain it in a way that they can actually understand it and be able to use this knowledge for success!
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Review tips on how to read a nutrition facts label and make informed decisions.


  • Discuss carb counting and understand the recommendations for carbs per meal or snack for men and women.


  • Understand the glycemic index and how to explain it to patients in a way that will be useful.

About the Presenter: Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN

Joanne Rinker is a Master's level dietitian. She has her BS and MS in Human Nutrition from West Virginia University. Joanne is currently in her sixteenth year as a Registered Dietitian and fourteenth year as a certified diabetes educator. Since August, 2013, Joanne has been working as the Senior Director for Community Health Improvement for Population Health Improvement Partners. In her current role, she works to increase community coalitions and assists them in identifying sustainable evidence based strategies to reach the Healthy North Carolina 2020 goals and objectives.

Rinker started her Public Health career with the North Carolina Diabetes Prevention and Control Program in May 2007 until July 2013. During those six years, she worked on the implementation and facilitation of the North Carolina Diabetes Education Recognition Program. As the program coordinator, Joanne was instrumental in building the largest American Diabetes Association (ADA) accredited site in the nation.

Joanne was named the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) 2013 Diabetes Educator of the Year and used that opportunity to spread the word about the relationship between diabetes, hearing loss and depression. She serves on the AADE Board of Directors 2015-2017 and became an AADE Spokesperson in January of 2016.

Joanne was the North Carolina Public Health Association President 2013-2014, is a graduate of the Bernstein Fellowship 2015 class and has been published and presented on the national level for both AADE and ADA.

She is married and the proud mother of two little girls. Her interests include, running marathons, 5ks and fun runs with daughters, volunteering as a Girl Scout troop leader, watching live music with her husband, and taking family vacations!
