MIND-BODY THERAPIES: AN ADJUNCT APPROACH TO NUTRITION AND SELF-CARE
According to a recent survey developed by the DIFM DPG of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, half of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists said that they personally use Mind-Body therapies, and over half said that they would recommend it to their patients. Given the known role of stress contributing to the rise of chronic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disorders, stress reduction strategies are integral in chronic disease prevention and management. In addition to providing Medical Nutrition Therapy, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are especially qualified to help patients to manage stress to improve health outcomes.

As RDNs it is within our scope of practice to discuss topics such as stress, sleep and mindful eating with our clients and recommend strategies such as mind-body therapies as part of a holistic, integrative approach to nutrition and health. In order to utilize our scope of practice to the fullest, it is highly beneficial and recommended for RDNs to practice these strategies themselves. When we take care of ourselves, we are in the best position to provide care to others.

In this one-hour webinar, RDNs will learn about and experience mind/body therapeutic techniques, including meditations, breathing techniques, and Yoga Nidra, and their implications for use with patients as an adjunct to MNT. This webinar will be an informative, experiential and practical experience that aims to leave RDNs not only with a sense of calm, but with valuable tools and resources they can use in practice with clients and in their own lives.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:

  • Recite current statistics on the interest and practice of mind/body therapies amongst RDNs, health care consumers, and the U.S. population.
  • Discuss evidence-based research on meditation and yoga practices and their effects on chronic disease management.
  • Define stress and its role in chronic disease management within a RDNs Scope of Practice.
  • Explain the chakras and how they relate to subtle body energy and internal organ health.
  • Experience one breathing technique, one guided meditation, and one food/mindful eating meditation.
  • Acquire self-care practices to help prevent burnout and for doing your best work.
  • List an array of resources, including upcoming seminars and trainings in yoga and mind-body therapies for healthcare professionals and for use with patients and clients.
