Description:
With one in five of America's children classified as overweight, pediatric obesity is a troubling health issue facing today's nutrition professionals. This course focuses on the problem of obesity in children from diagnosis through prevention, management, and support. Current nutrition
and physical activity programs are also discussed. |
Educational Objectives:
- Assess the pediatric patient for growth and weight status
- Calculate appropriate caloric and nutrient prescriptions for the overweight pediatric patient
- Describe medical, pharmaceutical and surgical interventions for pediatric obesity
- Design a well-balanced diet for the overweight pediatric patient
- Recognize potential complications in pediatric obesity
- Identify counseling techniques and strategies to utilize with pediatric patients and families
- Identify available support resources for treatment of overweight children

About the Author:
Dr. Bowers is a registered dietitian. She earned her
Ph.D. in
nutritional sciences, with a minor in microbiology and
immunology, from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She
completed her M.S. in nutrition at Texas Womans University
in Houston while completing a dietetic internship at the
Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She has a B.S.
degree in dietetics, with a minor in chemistry, from the
University of Arizona. She has more than 13 years of
clinical nutrition experience specializing in nutrition
support and HIV/AIDS nutrition. Her works have appeared in
peer-reviewed journals, books and the lay literature. She
has received numerous awards and fellowships, including
the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award from the
Arizona Dietetic Association and the Emerging Leader
Award, the E. Neige Todhunter Memorial Doctoral
Fellowship, the Dietetic Educators of Practitioners
Graduate Scholarship, and the University of Arizona Food
Science Fellowship, A+ Advisor Award for the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Outstanding Student
Organization Advisor Award from the University of Arizona.
She has served in various positions for the HIV/AIDS
Dietetic Practice Group of the American Dietetic
Association. Dr. Bowers was a faculty member in the
Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of
Arizona for over five years, where she advised students
and taught undergraduate courses in clinical nutrition.
Dr. Bowers teaches part-time for the University
of Phoenix Online and Central Arizona College and works as
a
consultant on various writing and educational projects.
